Search for full text in SPIN (Searchable Physics Information Network) Web

I have activated Open URL submission (the ability to "search for full text") to the SPIN Web database. We currently have access to full-text for the American Journal of Physics, Physics Teacher, and Reviews of Modern Physics thorough this database. It also contains the abstracts of over 80 scientific journals published by the American Institute of Physics and its Member Societies since 1975.

Although we may not have full-text for many of the other journals indexed by this database, using Article Linker to search for full-text should provide a link on the results page for users to populate the ILL request form for ILLiad with the proper citation information.

Users may also use the RefWorks link on the bottom of the Article Linker results page to import citation information directly into RefWorks.

New database: Emergency Disasters Data Base (Em-Dat)

By request, the free resource Emergency Disasters Data Base (Em-Dat) has been added to the list of all library databases and the Geology and Geography subject pages. Please let me know if there are any questions concerning this addition.

Felix G. Woodward Library holdings available in WorldCat.org

Holdings from Felix G. Woodward Library are now displayed in the free version of WorldCat (http://www.worldcat.org/) This resource can be accessed from the library website menu at “Search and Find—Other Catalogs—WorldCat”.

WorldCat information about our library materials is also now available through Google, Yahoo!, and Windows Live Academic. See instructions below:

Google, Yahoo! Search:

Include either of the following key phrases with your search terms:

  • "find in a library" (include phrasing quote marks)-----example: “find in a library” of mice and men
  • site:worldcatlibraries.org (no space after colon)

Including either phrase limits your search results to items owned by WorldCat libraries.

Google Books:

There are no special terms to enter. When you locate a book or other monograph of interest, look for the link "Find this book in a library."

New databases from Gale

Three new databases from Gale have been added to our collection. All three of these were provided by the Tennessee Electronic Library and are now available from the list of all databases. All contain the ability to direct export into RefWorks (see instructions here).

Southern Life is a database created specifically for SOLINET members. It has been made available through the US History subject page.

InfoTrac Science is a database created specifically for the Tennessee State Library and Archives and is only available through TEL. It has been made available through the Biology and Agriculture subject pages.

The above databases may contain journal titles that overlap with titles from our existing resources. At this time, there is no easy way to discover how many unique titles are contained in each one. Since these are custom databases, they are not yet available in the Serials Solutions knowledge base. This also means that journals from these databases will not show up in Article Linker or Find Periodicals searches.

InfoTrac Custom Newspapers contains full-text for over 50 newspapers not previously available within our collection. A list of these unique titles with coverage dates can be found here. A link to this resource has been included on the News and Current Events subject page. These titles will soon appear in Article Linker and Find Periodicals searches.

Please let me know if you have any questions concerning these new resources.

Scribner Writers Series and Twayne's Author Series

Access has now been provided to Scribner Writers Series and Twayne's Author Series from the list of all databases. These links allow you to search these resources individually in their native interface. The native interfaces for these resources both contain a section of “Research Ideas” which students may find useful. In addition, both of these resources can also be searched individually or simultaneously through the Literature Resource Center. On the subject page for Literature, the entry for Literature Resource Center now contains links to these individual databases.

These literature resources were recently added to the Tennessee Electronic Library. Since APSU currently subscribes to Scribner Writers Series, we should receive a credit from Gale for the amount remaining on our subscription.

Please let me know if you have questions about these new additions.

New database: Philosopher's Index

On campus and remote access has now been provided through the list of all library databases in addition to the philosophy and religious studies resource pages for the Philosopher's Index.

This resource is hosted on Ovid's SilverPlatter platform and updated quarterly. Only one user from APSU may access this resource simultaneously.

Options to "search for full-text" should appear in the citations for journal articles within this database.

Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions concerning this resource.

Modifications to EBSCO nursing databases

In June, EBSCO discontinued individual links to the Clinical Pharmacology database and moved this content to the Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition database. Since APSU does not subscribe to this resource, all links to Clinical Pharmacology have been removed. An alternative resource to find pharmacology information is MICROMEDEX Health Care Series Online.

Pre-CINAHL content has been successfully integrated into the CINAHL with Full Text database. Users will no longer see a separate listing for Pre-CINAHL on the Choose Databases screen in EBSCOhost, and will be able to simply access all of this content through the above-referenced database.

In order to encourage the use of CINAHL subject headings, the combined link to the databases CINAHL with Full Text and Nursing and Allied Health Collection has been separated on the nursing subject page and the medical studies page. When searching both databases simultaneously, links to browse the CINAHL thesaurus and some other features are not available.

The full text journals in the Nursing and allied Health Collection are indexed by CINAHL and should be available when "searching for full text" through Article Linker.

Please let me know if you have questions concerning these modifications.

Tuesday, July 10, 2007

Seperation of PsycARTICLES and PsycINFO databases

The once combined databases PsycINFO and PsycARTICLES have been separated due to the fact that combined searching removes many of the limits available when searching within a single thesaurus. For example, when searching only PsycINFO users are given the option to set limits on the bottom of the search screen based upon age, population, language, etc.

These databases were combined when we had access to these and several other psychology databases through another vendor. If users still desire to search the databases simultaneously, directions have been provided on the intro page for each database.

Please note that the journals contained within PsycARTICLES are indexed by PsycINFO. Therefore, clicking on "Search for full text" links within PsycINFO citations will lead users to the full text articles in PsycArticles.

Please let me know if you have questions concerning these modifications.

Removal of access to Book Index and Current Biography Illustrated

APSU did not renew subscriptions to Book Index with Reviews (provided free to APSU last year) and Current Biography Illustrated for 2007-08. Our access to these databases ended on June 30, 2007. All links to these resources have been removed from the library website.

WorldCat.org added to list of databases

By request, I have added WorldCat to the list of all databases. This new link directs users to WorldCat.org (the new free version of this service). Since this free version searches the complete WorldCat database, users may not have to use the pay-per search option available through First Search. The subscription (pay-per-search) version enables users to search multiple terms in specific fields (title, author, subject, etc.) and limit by characteristics such as format, date, or audience level.

Please look over the information provided on the info page for this resource (http://library.apsu.edu/inform/21WorldCat.htm) and let me know if you have any questions concerning this update.

New resource: SciFinder Scholar

APSU now has access to SciFinder Scholar. SciFinder Scholar is a research discovery tool that allows college students and faculty to access a wide diversity of research from many scientific disciplines, including biomedical sciences, chemistry, engineering, material science, agricultural science, and more! Created by CAS (a division of the American Chemical Society), it serves as an electronic version of Chemical Abstracts providing references from more than 9500 journals and patents from over 50 patent-issuing organizations. It also contains the world's largest collection of organic and inorganic substance information.

Please click here for an overview of all content available in SciFinder Scholar.

To access this resource, you will be required to download software onto your computer. Please see http://library.apsu.edu/inform/21SciFinder.htm for more information and installation instructions.

This software should be available on all Woodward Library public computers by early July 2007.

Links to SciFinder Scholar have been provided on the list of all databases along with the subject pages for chemistry, biology, engineering, and agriculture.

New database: PILOTS

On campus and remote access has now been provided through the list of all library databases and the psychology resource page to the PILOTS (Published International Literature On Traumatic Stress) database.

While the PILOTS bibliographic database is available for free through the National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder website, accessing this resource through the library website will give users the added option to easily discover if a journal listed in a citation is available online or in print at Woodward Library. To access this feature use the "Search for full text" links provided at the bottom of each citation.

Due to the purchase of PsycARTICLES, this version of the PILOTS database from ProQuest / CSA was provided to APSU at no additional charge.

Thursday, March 08, 2007

New database: Academic Onefile

The Tennessee Electronic Library now includes the Thomson-Gale database Academic OneFile. Off campus and remote access has been provided to this resource in the list of all library databases.

Academic Onefile uses the familiar InfoTrac interface, but it offers more academic content than InfoTrac OneFile. It indexes 11,000 journals (7,000 not in InfoTrac Onefile) and offers full-text for 3500 peer-reviewed, full text articles. In addition, it offers transcripts from NPR, CNN, and the CBC; audio versions of every NPR broadcast since 1990; and full audio versions of all major medical journals. It also offers nearly 700 full-text CINAHL titles (More than 400 of these cannot be found in EBSCO's databases).

I used the overlap analysis tool within Serials Solutions to determine what new full-text journal titles Academic OneFile will provide APSU. There were 23 new titles and 3 journals with new full-text holdings. I have listed the unique titles and holdings below (this list does not include the numerous new titles indexed by Academic OneFile).

I will adding Academic OneFile to most of the library subject resource pages. Acrticle Linker and Find Periodicals products have been updated and these additions should be available by late Friday afternoon.
