New resource: ebrary

ebrary (a collection of around 250 electronic books) is now available from the a to z list of databases.

Since the computers in the InfoCommons have been updated with a new image containing permission for the ebrary reader, ebrary titles can now be accessed from these computers.

However, an incompatibility of the ebrary reader with the latest version of Firefox (Firefox 3) will require ebrary titles to be viewed with Internet Explorer on library computers. I have placed a notice concerning this requirement at the top of the ebrary info page. There is a workaround for installation of the ebrary reader in Firefox 3 listed on the info page. This procedure should work for APSU employee computers and the personal/home computers of students.

Even when using ebrary reader in Internet Explorer, there will be a very brief installation procedure for the ebrary reader. Installation instuctions are provided on the info page.

ebrary is currently working on a Java-based reader which I hope will eliminate many of the problems concerning insatllation of the ebrary reader.

MARC records for ebrary titles are available and should appear in the Felix Catalog after they have been uploaded.

Please let me know if you have any questions concerning this resource.

FirstSearch and GPO modifications

It is no longer necessary to log-in to FirstSearch databases with a username and password from the purple folder. All available FirstSearch databases have been added to the A to Z list of databases and can be accessed through IP authentication on campus and through EZProxy log-in from remote locations.

A list of available FirstSearch databases is also provided on the FirstSearch info page. This list distinguishes between those we have access to though an annual subscription and those which still charge per search. I am still in the process of adding these databases to the appropriate subject pages.

GPO is now available through the FirstSearch interface. All links through the library website now link to GPO in FirstSearch (instead of the SilverPlatter version). A link to the SiverPlatter version of GPO has been provided on the bottom of the GPO info page, since the library will still have access to it through September.

Please let me know if you have questions concerning these changes.

JSTOR now requires log-in for export of citations

The new user interface for JSTOR has been released. It appears to be working properly; however, users must now create a MyJSTOR account to be able to:
  • Save citations
  • Email citations
  • Export citations to bibliographic software
  • Accept JSTOR Terms and Conditions once
  • Update your MyJSTOR profile
This means users will have to create a JSTOR account before they can export to RefWorks. I will update the instructions on the RefWorks page.

Discussion about this addition has already started on some LISTSERVs. Many feel the log-in is unnecessary and not respectful of user privacy.

Encyclopedia of Life

Sean discovered a new online resource called Encyclopedia of Life.

The Encyclopedia of Life is a series of websites that unites mammal, bird, bug, plant, bacteria, etc. in one location, providing in-depth, scientifically valid information on individual species as well as developing a clear understanding of how ecosystems work and change over time and under different conditions.

Ultimately, the Encyclopedia of Life will provide an online database for all 1.8 million species now known to live on Earth.

At the recommendation of Philenese, links to this free resource have been provided on the biology and agriculture resource pages.
