New Interface and Content: Oxford English Dictionary (OED)

The OED Online has been updated and changed (it now contains 600,000 words and 3 million quotations, traces over 1,000 years of the English language, and is integrated with the Historical Thesaurus of the OED .

Access to the new interface is now provided on the library website at http://library.apsu.edu/inform/21OED.htm. A link to the previous version will also be provided here until 3-31-2011.

Below is a description of the new resource taken directly from the Chief Editor John Simpson:

We've tried to tilt the site more towards the English language than towards the dictionary as an end in itself. Search results move from simple lists to visualizations/timelines. They can also be filtered according to a number of categories, allowing you to start off with big numbers (e.g. all English words derived from Italian), and reduce them by steps down to small, significant subsets (e.g. all English words derived from Italian from the field of Music which are first recorded in English in the 18th century). That's 167 words, starting with adagio.

Other new features include pages (updated each quarter from the dictionary data) on the OED's most-cited authors and texts, plus links to other online resources—such as the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography—offering more on those who've shaped the language. There's also an ‘Aspects of English’ section, a series of descriptive articles on language, past and present.

Perhaps the most important new feature involves the Historical Thesaurus to the OED, published in book form in 2009. The entire text is now integrated with the OED Online, so that you can follow semantic links throughout the dictionary.

Teacher Reference Center

Teacher Reference Center is now available in the A-Z list of databases and the education resources page.

The TRC is a free resource provided by EBSCO. I made a request to add it to our EBSCO account so we could use “Search for Full Text” links and get other links for full-text articles from Academic Search Premier included. Sharon requested this resource to be included on the education resources page.

TRC provides indexing and abstracts for over 280 of the most popular teacher and administrator journals and magazines to assist professional educators. A free version is also available at http://www.teacherreference.com, but it will not link to our full-text resources.

New database: Books & Authors

I have made a new resource from TEL available on our A_Z list and Literature subject page. It is called Books and Authors and you can find out about some of the features on the info page at http://library.apsu.edu/inform/21booksauthors.htm . I my opinion, this is like a much improved “What Do I read Next” database with a better interactive interface that allows for accounts to be created and personalized.

Note:

Books & Authors lets you create a landing page for a book club program, as well as unique pages for every discussion group in the library. This might be helpful for events like the Peay Read. Here is an example of how it can be customized:

http://www.gale.cengage.com/booksandauthors/GuidedTour/Books%20&%20Authors%20-%20Library%20Toolkit%20Guided%20Tour_demo.htm

Let me know if you would like to experiment with this customization.

This is a free resource that was recently provided by EBSCO.

Mental Measurements Yearbook (MMY) with Tests in Print

Our subscription to Mental Measurements Yearbook is now provided by EBSCO and hosted on the EBSCOhost interface. This replaces the previous subscription we had through Ovid/Silver Platter.

With this change in vendor, we will also have access to an electronic version of Tests in Print incorporated into the database. Below is a comparison these two resources:
  • MMY consists of descriptive entries, references and critical reviews of commercially published tests, published in English. Each MMY includes reviews of tests that are new or substantially revised since the previous edition.
  • TIP is a comprehensive volume describing every test that is currently available for purchase.
  • Not all tests and measures are reviewed in MMY and there are somewhat firm requirements that tests must meet to be featured.
  • Because not all tests are reviewed in MMY, TIP is necessary to identify and locate tests which are available and in print, but not widely popular or used enough to be featured in MMY.
Link to Mental Measurements Yearbook (MMY) with Tests in Print info page.
